Detroit Pistons center Jalen Duren faces a 11:59 p.m. ET deadline on Thursday, October 1, to decide between signing a one-year, $9.6 million qualifying offer or accepting the team's five-year, $200 million fully guaranteed contract. Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon has pointed to Thursday as the decision date, though the team could technically extend it.
Duren, 22, is coming off a breakout season in which he averaged 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game, earned his first All-Star selection, and made Third-Team All-NBA. That production made him eligible for a five-year maximum rookie-scale extension worth roughly $287 million — well above Detroit's $200 million offer, a gap of about $87 million that has stalled negotiations for months. Duren has reportedly felt disrespected during the talks, and financial terms alone may not resolve the standoff.
As a restricted free agent earlier in the summer, Duren met with the Lakers and Kings while the Pistons maintained they would not entertain a sign-and-trade and would match any offer sheet. The Pistons have since removed a disputed weight provision — informal monthly weigh-in language — from the offer as a concession, but the core dollar gap remains. Duren has missed the start of training camp amid the impasse. Detroit has already extended another young core piece this year, signing Ausar Thompson to a five-year, $155 million extension, underscoring how much is riding on retaining both bigs long-term.
If Duren signs the qualifying offer, he would be the first player since 1999 to do so after making an All-NBA or All-Star team — none of the 43 players who have accepted a qualifying offer in that span have held that status. A qualifying-offer season would let him play out 2026-27 on a one-year, $9.6 million deal with no long-term security, betting that another strong year makes him a bigger name in unrestricted free agency next summer. Langdon has said Duren "is going to be a huge part of the team regardless of which decision he makes," and the Pistons have publicly ruled out trading him.
