Wild Card Wednesday. All four MLB series are 1-0 and every team on the road is playing to stay alive, plus two WNBA teams facing the same math. The night's biggest game has a rivalry attached to it: Boston at Yankee Stadium, down 0-1, needing a win just to force a Game 3.
Marquee: Red Sox at Yankees (8:00 PM ET, NBC)
New York took Game 1 by a 9-0 laugher, with Cam Schlittler striking out 10 over 6 1/3 scoreless innings and Spencer Rice driving in six, including a grand slam. Boston sends Sonny Gray back to the mound to try to save the season; New York counters with Max Fried, who's making his first career playoff start on regular rest after a strong debut regular season in pinstripes. Boston has to win twice in a row now, on the road both times, against a Yankees team that looked completely in control on Tuesday. That's the story tonight, whether the Red Sox lineup that went quiet in Game 1 can answer or whether this ends in a sweep.

- Phillies at Braves (2:00 PM ET, NBC). Atlanta stole Game 1 on Austin Riley's three-run homer in the eighth, turning a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 win, and now has Philadelphia on the brink at Truist Park. Cristopher Sanchez starts for a Phillies lineup that needs to find the early runs it left on the table Tuesday; Tyler Mahle gets the ball for a Braves team one win from advancing.
- White Sox at Astros (5:00 PM ET, Peacock). Chicago stunned Houston 6-3 in Game 1 and now has the Astros needing a win just to survive. Houston burned eight pitchers, including closer Josh Hader, getting through that loss, which puts real weight on Hunter Brown tonight. Sean Burke goes for a White Sox team that smells an upset.
- Cubs at Padres (10:00 PM ET, Peacock). San Diego jumped Chicago early in Game 1, Fernando Tatis Jr. going deep on the first pitch of the game in an 8-0 win, and saved almost its entire bullpen doing it. Nick Pivetta, who's posted a 1.45 ERA over his last four September starts, takes the mound with that advantage behind him. Kevin Gausman starts for a Cubs team that needs length and needs it now.
- Dream at Mystics (7:00 PM ET, ESPN). Atlanta took Game 1 91-77 behind a 56-36 second half, and Washington is now playing to keep its season alive at home. The Dream were the WNBA's best road team all year by net rating, which is not what a Mystics team looking to even the series wants to hear.
- Valkyries at Wings (9:00 PM ET, ESPN). Golden State blew out Dallas 104-80 in Game 1. The Wings get a home crowd and not much else working in their favor as they try to avoid a sweep against the No. 2 seed.
