The New York Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys 28-20 on Sunday Night Football on September 13, giving John Harbaugh a win in his first game as the Giants' head coach.
Harbaugh took the job in January after Baltimore fired him following 18 seasons; the Giants were reported to be giving him a five-year, $100 million deal. He had told Giants fans months earlier that he wanted to build a team that could beat Dallas, ESPN noted.
Jaxson Dart was efficient rather than spectacular
Dart completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, and added 54 rushing yards. Two of the touchdowns went to tight end Isaiah Likely, who caught all eight of his targets for 78 yards. The third went to running back Devin Singletary in the fourth quarter, the score that settled it.
Cam Skattebo opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, his first game back from injury, and finished with 81 yards on 18 carries. Likely's first touchdown, a 1-yard catch, put New York up 14-7 at the half; Prescott threw an interception just before the break. Likely scored again in the third quarter on a 12-play, 74-yard drive that ran 8:01 off the clock, and the Giants led 21-14 after three.
Dallas kept scoring but never led
Prescott completed 22 of 34 passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns and the one interception, hitting CeeDee Lamb in the second quarter and Javonte Williams in the third. Williams also ran in a touchdown in the fourth quarter that pulled Dallas within a point, but Williams drew a taunting penalty afterward, and Brandon Aubrey missed the extra point from the longer distance that resulted. Devin Singletary's touchdown catch then set the 28-20 final. The Cowboys were penalized eight times for 85 yards, not counting an early intentional delay of game.
The Giants' win closed out a Sunday that had opened with the Bears beating the Panthers 59-37 in the highest-scoring season opener in NFL history, a slate previewed in our Games to Watch for Sunday, September 13.
