Giannis Antetokounmpo says his first training camp with the Miami Heat has been "everything that I expected and more," Bleacher Report reported. He called the team's chemistry "great" and said "it's only going to get better."
Antetokounmpo was traded to Miami in July after 13 seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks that produced two MVP awards and a championship, ending a stretch that included the Celtics and Heat emerging as the two finalists for the trade. He said he has already benefited from scrimmages against Bam Adebayo, Bobby Portis, and Nick Richards, calling the Heat's style "totally different to what I've been used to" and praising the speed of its defenders.
His health and the Bucks' decision
Antetokounmpo played just 36 games last season because of calf injuries, and he disputed any suggestion that Milwaukee held him out at its own discretion. "I've been unlucky, a lot of times," he said, adding that he has changed his diet and is working on his body. He said he feels "good" now. Milwaukee's handling of his playing time drew scrutiny last season after the NBA opened an investigation into the Bucks for benching a healthy Giannis.
Facing Milwaukee
Antetokounmpo expects his return to Milwaukee to be difficult. "I think going back in a different uniform... it's going to be difficult," he said, adding that he plans to "put on a show" and has no regrets about the trade. He becomes eligible to sign a contract extension with Miami in January.
Miami opens its season October 21. Antetokounmpo will first face the Bucks as an opponent on November 18, and he'll make his first trip back to Milwaukee as a visitor on January 28.
