Football finally takes the night. The NFL's Monday opener puts Denver at Kansas City in the one game everybody was going to watch anyway, and it lands at the exact moment baseball turns serious. Nine MLB games fill the early windows, and four of them involve teams still doing real math on a playoff spot.
Marquee: Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs, season opener at Arrowhead (8:15 p.m. ET, ESPN/ABC)
This is the rematch of the division. Denver took the AFC West from Kansas City last year and ended a nine-season run, and now it opens the title defense in the loudest building it visits. The story is under center on both sides. Patrick Mahomes is coming back from the ACL tear he suffered last December, and per the Broncos' own game preview he practiced in full through camp and is expected to start. Nobody knows how he looks taking live contact until he takes some. On the other side, Bo Nix gets a full year of the offense and a new target in Jaylen Waddle, and he gets to throw at a Kansas City secondary that lost most of its starters. A rebuilt back end in Week 1 against a quarterback who has seen you twice a year is not where the Chiefs want to be tested first.

Also tonight
- Atlanta Braves at Chicago Cubs (7:40 p.m. ET). The best game on the baseball board. Atlanta is 88-62, Chicago is 83-67, and both are playing for seeding rather than survival. Wrigley in mid-September with two clubs this good is the version of the ballpark everyone sells you.
- New York Yankees at Minnesota Twins (7:40 p.m. ET). New York is 86-63 and still has ground to make up in its own division. Minnesota is 70-79 and playing spoiler, which in a September road trip is exactly the kind of team that costs you a game you assumed.
- Los Angeles Dodgers at Cincinnati Reds (6:40 p.m. ET). At 90-59 the Dodgers own the best record on tonight's slate. Cincinnati is 70-79 and out of it, but Great American Ball Park is small enough that any lineup can make a night uncomfortable.
- Chicago White Sox at Cleveland Guardians (6:40 p.m. ET). Two teams separated by half a game, 76-73 against 76-74. This is the quiet one worth checking in on, because the AL Central is going to be decided by nights like this one rather than by anything dramatic.
- San Diego Padres at Colorado Rockies (8:40 p.m. ET). San Diego is 81-68 and cannot afford a trap game. Colorado is 55-94 and has nothing to protect, which at Coors is its own kind of hazard.
- Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays (7:07 p.m. ET). Toronto sits at 75-75, dead even with two weeks left and no margin for a bad series. Detroit is 70-79 and already looking at next year.
The thread tonight is teams finding out what they actually have. Kansas City finds out about a knee, Denver finds out whether last season's division title was the start of something, and half the baseball slate finds out whether the record next to their name still means anything in ten days.
