Tuesday is a WNBA night wearing a baseball costume. Fifteen MLB games fill the evening, but the one that matters starts at 7:30 and involves two 20-win teams that have spent the whole summer circling each other. Everything else is undercard.
Marquee: New York Liberty at Indiana Fever, two 20-win teams in a playoff-seeding fight (7:30 PM ET, ESPN)
This almost happened without Caitlin Clark. She picked up her eighth technical foul of the season Saturday against the Sky, which under WNBA rules triggers an automatic one-game suspension. The league rescinded it, so she is available, and the Fever's own game preview lists her as probable with a back issue. Indiana is 20-12 and hosting at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. New York is 20-13 and riding a four-game winning streak, though the Liberty are shorthanded, with Leonie Fiebich out with a foot injury. Two teams separated by half a game, on national television, with the healthier roster on the road. That is the whole game.

- Washington Mystics at Las Vegas Aces (10:00 PM ET). The Aces are 22-11 and the best team in the West. Washington at 19-12 is the surprise of the season and needs road wins like this one to hold its seed. The late window is where the standings actually move.
- Phoenix Mercury at Los Angeles Sparks (10:00 PM ET). Two teams outside the picture, 12-22 and 12-19, playing for pride and lottery position at the same time. Nobody will watch it. It will probably be the most entertaining game of the night.
- Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals (6:45 PM ET). The Cubs are 69-50 and treating August like a test they already studied for. Washington is 59-61 and playing spoiler in an empty ballpark.
- Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees (7:05 PM ET, TBS). The national window. The Yankees are 66-52 and stable. Seattle at 56-63 has run out of runway and is now playing out a season that looked very different in June.
- Milwaukee Brewers at San Diego Padres (9:40 PM ET). Best record in baseball, 74-45, against a 63-57 Padres club still fighting for a wild card. This is the best baseball game on the board and it starts after most of the country is asleep.
- Kansas City Royals at Los Angeles Dodgers (10:10 PM ET). The Dodgers are 71-48 and hosting a 49-71 Royals team. Watch it for the Dodgers, not the matchup.
The thread tonight is separation. Liberty and Fever are half a game apart, Mystics and Aces are fighting over the same bracket line, and the Brewers are quietly building a lead nobody is going to catch. August is when the standings stop being a suggestion.
